A few days after posting about my dirty thirty bucket list – I was presented with the opportunity to knock the first one off!
1. Do something crazy…. in the air – CHECK!
09.29.13 – Flying at Kahana
A beautiful day. I actually ended work at a decent hour, went to finally try the newest rave “F’Real”, then got the message that today is the day to fly! I made up my mind, got in my car and drove to Kahana to meet my friend. (feeling nervous and excited)
Of course we have to hike up the mountain in order to take off, so we packed up our gear and went for a gnarly hike. Let me tell you, with a 20-25 pound bag on your back it is a bit difficult and very tiring to climb that mountain. But I can successfully say, I reached the top and at the end of it all, the view was totally worth it! (feeling sweaty yet rejuvenated)
My instructor went over the basics on how to launch. He laid out the wing and buckled me in. It’s time for lift off! My main instruction was to stay on my feet. It is a bit harder than I thought. We are strapped together, the wind pulls on the wing and you have to run up the side of the hill and then back down to take off. Well, first try … I was on my knees epic fail, but take two went smoothly and we’re OFF~ (feeling exhilarated)
The cool air hits my face, you can look either which way and see the mountain, the ocean, and the gorgeous clear blue sky! It was such a peaceful flight! Even if you are scared of heights, once you have lift off and settle into the seat, I think you can really find it relaxing being out in the open flying free.. and enjoying one cold brew! (feeling at peace)
We soared for a good 30-45 minutes and then decided to head back in, but not before doing some tricks! Basically you can steer with the brakes dangling from the wings or by shifting your body weight left and right. We swayed to the right then to the left then right left right left right left – woooooo feeling dizzy!!!! We are spiraling down like a roller coaster weeeeeee!!!! The beach is in near sight and we come out of our spiral for a soft, smooth landing! (feeling uplifted and truly appreciative)
I am so grateful to have had this opportunity!
Now on to the next item on my bucket list! You aint got nothing on my dirty thirty!!!!! :)
